Two Hearts, One Soul

Two Hearts, One Soul

I think our souls have magnets on opposite poles,

Inexorably drawn together, and I remember the first tug I felt,

Hidden behind a Palmetto tree while you chased the scavenger’s clues,

Stripped off your clothes and plunged to the bottom of Sea Mist’s murky pool.

Did you feel the tug too, the night we moved in time to the music,

Close enough to feel my heart? One thing led to another and we were

High on Mount Graybeard, and after darkness fell, the rain came heavy,

You stretched out your tarp, shielding my hammock to keep me dry,

A little Ruth and Boaz there, the other way ‘round.

Your pack was full of mysteries, even more so, your life.

An aura I couldn’t penetrate enchanted me;

Your stories told, a layer here, a layer there,

Peeling back to reveal flashes of your heart,

I drug my chair a little nearer, always wanting more.

We were discovering a sacred place of safety together,

Unneeded masks lay unheeded, tossed aside.

Years would pass, miles under our tires, shoulder-to-shoulder,

Until the waiting was over and ever-earnest, right from the script,

The words came; invitation to face-to-face, finally!

If two halves make a whole, something magical found in our

Fire and ice, gloomy and light, your rock to my sand,

get it done and do it right, complete when hand-in hand.

Famines, wars, battles to fight, but snuggled in tight,

In our cozy hobbit hole, all is right. Fully one

Yet learning how to be, whole.

The clock speeds up, the years fly by, our love gave life.

A Jamsie boy, our brightest joy, then a light burnt out,

Hazel’s bud, our hope stored up.

Ruthie bean, sugar and spice, bringing pure delight.

Annie next, worth all the tears, none of our fears coming true.

A decade in, we’re finding our stride, you’re setting the pace,

Sometimes we race, sometimes we crawl,

But always it’s into the same bed after darkness falls,

Two halves of a whole, your hard to my soft,

Adventure and risk, you’re stable, secure.

Two members, one team, two oxen, one yoke.

Two rows, one path, two hearts, one soul.
